The Acer Helios 700 Hyper Drift feels a little bulky and a little old. This is due to the fact that it is very thick and secondly has huge bezels on the side of the display. But considering that this is a gaming laptop having the best in class specs and a desktop-like gaming experience one could oversee these drawbacks. Furthermore, the reason for its thickness is its cooling system. It has really powerful and loud fans which help to keep the powerful CPU and GPU cool.

Display of Helios 700

There is nothing to complain about the display of Acer Helios 700 Hyper Drift except for its bezels. Nonetheless, the Helios 700 has a 1920 x 1080 (1080p) resolution Full HD Display. Along with this, the refresh rate of this display is 144 Hz. This machine also has support for G-Sync technology so there is little to no chance that this laptop will produce jittery visuals.

This is one of the key areas where the Acer Helios 700 Hyper Drift is different from a ton of different high-end gaming laptops. The Keyboard of Helios 700 or the hyper drift can slide forward along the rail, revealing the laptops cooling fans. Acer says that when you need extra cooling or want to overclock the CPU and GPU, you could drive the keyboard towards you and with the help of an additional two fans the cooling efficiency of the laptop would increase. The Sliding process isn’t mechanical so you would have to grab one of the groves in the keyboard and pull it towards you. After pulling the trackpad tilts down to form a palm rest.

Is the Hyper Drift Keyboard a Gimmick?

No, the Hyper Drift keyboard doesn’t feel like a gimmick. Moreover, it would have been really tough for you to use the keyboard without sliding it down. This is due to the fact that the Helios 700 is considerably thick and while using it your writs would be in the air. Thus making your long typing session or gaming session painful. But once the Hyper Drift Keyboard is slid down it forms the palm rest and tackles the previous problem. Also sliding it down reveals two additional fans increasing the thermal performance of the laptop. So, Hyper Drift Keyboard is not a Gimmick.

How is the typing experience when the Hyper Drift Keyboard is slid down?

It certainly becomes more comfortable typing experience once the keyboard is slid down. This is because of the palm rest which is formed once it is slid down. On the other hand, using the trackpad becomes a bit difficult because of its tilt. To provide a desktop level keyboard experience while gaming Acer provides extra ‘WASD’ keys which have a metal spring mechanism. Furthermore, the keys are individually RGB backlit so you could customize the color on each key.

Processors in Acer Helios 700

To give you a desktop-level performance the Acer Helios 700 Hyper Drift comes with desktop level Intel CPU, the Intel Core i9 – 9980HK. To go with this you get one of the most powerful graphics cards from the RTX series, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080. This combination of powerful CPU and GPU will give a really immersive and high-end desktop-level gaming performance. Moreover, you can easily play any triple-A titles with 1080p resolution at 60+ FPS. Apart from this the CPU and the GPU both are overclockable.

RAM and Storage in Acer Helios 700

If you are going to play the heavy games on the Acer Helios 700 Hyper Drift, then you obviously need a place to store it. As a result, the Helios 700 Hyper Drift’s storage can be expanded up to 2 TB. Along with this, the storage device used is an SSD, hence the read and write speeds are faster comparatively. In addition, the RAM can also be expanded up to 64 GB of DDR4 RAM.

Battery Life and Thermal Performance

Considering the high-end specs in Helios 700 Hyper Drift it is not a surprise that the battery life is not great and the laptop will run out of juice in around 3 hours. But I don’t think anyone should complain about it since in return you are getting the desktop level gaming experience. Secondly, the powerful CPU and GPU demands good thermal performance and Helios 700 doesn’t fail to provide it. When the hyper drift keyboard is drifted down the two thermal fans get exposed and this helps in keeping the powerful GPU and CPU cool. Furthermore, there is also a turbo mode that can be used to increase the thermal efficiency the only downside is that it gets really loud. In conclusion, it has a really powerful thermal performance.

Connectivity and Ports

Acer Helios 700 has two USB-C ports (one of which is a Thunderbolt 3), three USB 3.1 ports, HDMI, DisplayPort, and an Ethernet port. The Helios 700 Hyper Drift comes with 5.1 Speaker System which is really great unless you are using it in the turbo mode. Secondly, for WiFi connection, you get support for WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac.

Final Verdict

Acer Helios 700 Hyper Drift is one of the most unique and powerful gaming laptops out there. Along with the most powerful CPU and GPU, it comes with a technology that is unique to it and cant be seen in any other latest laptops. Because of which comparing Helios 700 to any other laptop becomes difficult. Apart from this, the Helios 700 Hyper Drift will launch at the price of 2700 USD which is roughly 1,91,443 INR which is fairly reasonable. Altogether Helios 700 is for people looking out for desktop-like gaming experience on a laptop.
